Sarcoid Neuropathy

  • Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory multisystem disease of unknown origin.  The lungs are most frequently affected, but other organs can also be involved, including skin, eyes, liver, and lymph nodes.
  • Diagnosis based on histologic evidence of sarcoid granulomas in tissue biopsy.
  • Neurologic manifestations are relatively rare (CNS/PNS involvement 5%) but cranial nerve involvement somewhat common.
  • History-starts with Hutchinson’s description in 1877 of pt with cutaneous patches of hands and feet that developed over 2 yrs.
  • Prevelance-1-64 per 100,000 world- wide.
  • Histology-presence of non-caseating granulomas composed of clustered macrophages and lymphocytes-provides evidence of immunologic problem.
